The Beginning

All started from series of discussions among friends who are advocating agrarian reform, right to food, security sector reform, industry, labor, right to work and armed conflict violation. The result from the reflections and evaluation are the needs to consentrate intelectual works (studies) in advancing thoughts and implementation of democracy, human rights, and people organizing (to promote public participation and to encourage victims to be human rights defender). These reflections and evaluations are also demanding for a consolidation of advocates (lawyers) in defending victims and in pursuing legal reform.

Realizing the importance of a presence of an organization that able to do research and campaign on social justice issues and able to practice legal defense, therefore in the middle of July 2007 Indonesian Human Rights Committee for Social Justice (IHCS) was founded with the values of people-ness, peace, human rights, humanity based solidarity, democracy, social justice and gender equality. IHCS is also non sectarian and non partisan organization.

IHCS believes that the fulfillment of economic, social and cultural rights, and conflict resolution will only be achieved through democracy and reforms in legal and security sector.

In form of association, this organization takes role in promoting and defending human rights and upholding social justice by consolidating components which working in structural legal aid, and advancing and defending human rights, whether they are groups or individuals.

Because of this, IHCS was founded not only by those who come from legal works, but were also by delegations from labor and peasant organizations, woman and youth activists, and others who reside across regions, from Jakarta to Papua.
